Variation for outcrossing in self-incompatible plant populations

Role

PhD Student, Project Lead

I found widespread selfing is possible within self-incompatible Leavenworthia alabamica populations. I used:
- Experimental crosses
- Determined heritability with:
- Parent-offspring regression
- Breeder's equation
- Screened for mutations within the S-locus genes
- Tested for an association between selfing and the S-locus genotype
Found: Widespread heritable, continuous variation for self-compatibility that was not caused by mutations in the the S-locus. Therefore, many non-S-locus genes within the signalling cascade of this trait promote varied levels of selfing in this species.
